The article discusses the need to integrate the World Englishes paradigm into translator training courses. The concept of intervarietal translation, or intermediary translation, is introduced and defined in the framework of R. Jakobson’s semiotic classification of translation types. Three major problematic issues of intervarietal translation are dwelt upon — at the phono-graphic level (intelligibility), lexico-semantic level (comprehensibility), and discourse and pragmatic level (interpretability). Emphasis is made on the need to train translators from European languages to work with Asian Englishes, especially with Chinese English.

Keywords: translation and interpretation, intervarietal translation, world Englishes, phonographic challenges, lexico-semantic problems, discourse and pragmatic challenges.
