The paper focuses on semantic transformations of phraseological units which are a highly effective means of attracting the attention of the recipients and creating a language game. The aim of this paper is to present and describe individual types of semantic phraseological transformations, i.e. double actualisation and dephraseologisation, their characteristic features, ways of formation, and the effects they create on the reader within a comparative analysis. The authors provide practical examples of semantic transformations of phraseological units in newspaper articles using the example of two Slavic languages — Russian and Slovak, based on which conclusions are drawn.

Keywords: transformation, phraseological unit, semantics, double actualisation, dephraseologisation.
