The review analyzes the composition and critical apparatus of the book by S.А. Naydenov “Romance with the theater: plays, 1900–1917” (Moscow: Ruthenia, 2020. 640 p.). It is being noted that the publication of the book actualizes the work of one of the unheralded playwriters of the Silver Age, attracting the attention of readers and researchers to his art. The review emphasizes the scientific thoroughness of the voluminous introduction, where the writer’s work is reviewed in the context of the aesthetic trends of the period, with the involvement of extensive epistolary, memorial and archival materials. The compiler and author of the introduction M.V. Mikhailova made an attempt to introduce new features into the interpretation of Naydenov’s dramaturgical heritage.

Keywords: social problematics, psychologism, interpretation, biographical realities, the search for a new form, tradition.
