Alexander Vvedensky is a Russian avant-garde poet, a member of the Association of Real Art group of writers and avant-garde poets, known for his radical linguistic experiments and deep philosophical reflections. His poem “Elegy”, one of his most iconic later works, fully demonstrates the poet’s unique search for the essence of poetry, the logic of language and the problems of existence. In this work, Vvedensky, through illogical combinations of words, conflicts of semantics and intonation, as well as abrupt rhythmic shifts, achieves a high degree of uncertainty in poetic language, destroying the fixed meanings of traditional language. At the same time, the poem is built around such key concepts as time, death and God: their systematic deconstruction and reconstruction gives the work a deep philosophical content. In addition, Vvedensky reverses the linear structure of a traditional poem, creating a non-linear text through fragmentary, spasmodic narration and an open ending, emphasizing the ambiguity of the poem and the dynamic process of generating meaning. Having conducted an in-depth analysis of “Elegy” on linguistic, thematic and structural levels, this article shows how Vvedensky uses paradoxical methods of expression to challenge traditional poetic norms and philosophical categories and seeks the meaning of being against the background of absurdity and non-existence.
