The article is devoted to the problem of interaction of genres in Eastern and Western literature, which is an important part of modern literary criticism. It deals with the interaction in Mo Yan’s novel “The Republic of Wine”. The novel of a contemporary Chinese writer is considered in the aspect of ‘hallucinatory realism’, for the development of which the author was awarded the Nobel Prize (2012). The article examines the influence of the genres of Chinese classical literature, literature about the noble knights wuxia, Western European literature. The novel is analyzed in the context of the world literary process. The authors of the article examine the main characters of the novel and their relation to the plot-forming function, the main of which is the detective one. The layer of detective storytelling is considered with the satirical tradition. The article presents Mo Yan’s view on the traditions, mentality, and lifestyle of the Chinese people.
