The article deals with the academic and artistic oeuvre of Nafi Dzhusoity (1925–2017), a prominent representative of Ossetian, Soviet and Russian humanities and art. This concise biographical sketch exposes salient features of Nafi Dzhusoity's scientific outlook, the prevailing ideological and thematic directions of his lyrics, and the ideas and images of his epics. The primary feature that distinguishes the creative path and public engagement of Nafi Dzhusoity is his commitment to safeguarding the cultural interests of ethnic minority uplanders of the North Caucasus during the period of dissolution of ethnic uniqueness, initially within the Soviet context and subsequently on a global scale. This traditionalist and preservationist world outlook shaped his social activity and creative career. As a language scholar, Nafi Dzhusoity advocated the notion that national literature is contingent upon the existence of a national speech. As an artist, he prioritised his homeland, South Ossetia, and employed a variety of genres, including ballads, historical novels and novel-myths, to portray its daily life and historical existence. These works feature the heroes of the Ossetian Nart epos. Concomitantly, he embodied the qualities of a scientist and artist of broad generalisations, internationalist and humanist, with an openness to the future.
