The article is devoted to the consideration of phonology and its current state. The phoneme is included in all other levels of the language and in the inter-level stylistics, as it underlies the creation word meaning. In the first half of the 20th century, especially in its second half, the development of phonology was multidimensional. Scientific research was conducted in the field of phonology of each language of the peoples of the USSR both in monolingual and comparative terms. The combination of monolingual and linguocontrastive research in the field of phonology became the basis for its rapid development in the USSR and beyond. This situation has contributed to a serious implementation of phonological principles into the process of teaching pronunciation of a foreign language, as mastery of it is based on the study of its sound system and pronunciation norms. Since the end of the 20th century, there has been a decline in interest in conducting scientific research in the field of phonology. The reasons are different — from the phonological ones themselves (the absence of scientific centers on phonology) to sociolinguistic ones, the weakening of communication between CIS specialists, the intensive development of new directions in linguistics. The paper proposes aspects to increase interest in conducting phonological research in monolingual and comparative plans of Russian and Turkic languages (mono-, linguocontrastive phonological, phonostylistic, morphological; at the junction of phonology, cognitive linguistics and linguography in the context of the transition from Cyrillic to Latin in the Turkic-speaking republics; methods of teaching phonology, literary pronunciation, etc.), which determines the relevance of the scientific problem, its prospects, language material for future scientific research, the novelty of the approach to scientific research. In the course of conducting scientific research, such methods as the juxtaposition of minimal pairs, intra-linguistic comparison, interlanguage comparison, inductive and deductive methods were used, which helped to identify the theoretical and practical significance of the scientific problem.
