The article presents the experience of reconstructing the linguistic personality of a Russian emigrant of the early twentieth century based on the novel “Night Roads” by Gaito Gazdanov (1903–1971). The mutual influence and confrontation of the native language and culture and ‘acquired’ cultures and languages became an acute existential problem for Russian emigrants in France at the beginning of the 20th century. In order to survive in a foreign environment and earn a decent living, an emigrant needs to assimilate into a new social environment as quickly as possible, enter into dialogue and communication with it. In his novel, Gazdanov touched upon fundamental issues of intercultural interaction, such as: what does it mean for an ordinary person to change their language of communication, switch from their native language to another language; how does a change in social status and forced communication with an alien socio-cultural environment affect the quality of linguistic personality; how to communicate in a new society without knowing the communicative norms of communication; how is the transition to foreign linguistic and cultural norms of communication perceived by compatriots as an achievement or as a betrayal of native roots? These issues and problems of linguistic and cultural positioning of the emigrant's linguistic personality do not lose their relevance in the 21st century.
