The article based on extensive historical and cultural data as well as on the comparative method of its analysis deals with translation activities of Russian 18th century educated women, the said activity giving them a possibility to enter the outer and mostly male literary world that at the time was getting professionalized. Functioning in the new cultural space resulted in substantial rising of the women’s socio-cultural status, on the one hand, opening new perspectives for further development of Russian women’s writing, on the other.
Keywords: literature, translation, women translators, periodicals, professionalism, professional activity, amateur activity, socio-cultural hierarchy.
