The article is written on the material of the report that was introduced at the international conference «The Culture of Discontinuity: Does It Really Exist? Cultural Discussions and Their Historical Perspective in Russia» (Central Lancashire University, Preston, England, May 3–5, 2016). The article deals with studying various aspects of the Russian literature movement in time, the problem of its periodization. Also we consider that it is necessary to improve the existing terminological base and to differentiate such terms as «the history of literature» and «the literary process». The conclusion that the author of the article comes to is the following: the literary word has a specific nature, and that is what makes all attitudes towards literature disputable creating the hypothetical character of its history.

Key words: Literary Study methodology, terminological base, the history of literature, the literary process, periodization, traditions.
