The development and position of the Russian language in the 20th century and in the beginning of the 21st century are considered.Three cycles in its development are assigned — pre?Soviet, Soviet (socialist) and postsocialist. Special attention is paid to the characteristics of the main problems of the Russian language and its vocabulary. The important moments connected with Russian and its perspectives in the West Europe are examined.
Key words: the Russian language in the 20th century, three cycles in the development, Soviet sociolinguistic paradigm, postsoviet paradigm perspectives of Russian in Europe.
