This article is dedicated to the memory of the outstanding scholar Gadzhi Gamzatovich Gamzatov, who made a significant contribution to the development of various fields of Dagestani philological scholarship, including Dagestani Oriental studies. His scholarly works on the literary history of the peoples of Dagestan consistently emphasize the significant influence of the Oriental literary tradition in the formation of national literature. In this article, we examine the formation and development of Persian literature in Dagestan. The emergence of Persian literature in Dagestan stems from the political, trade, economic, and cultural relations between the peoples of Dagestan and Iran. Epigraphic and epistolary materials, manuscripts, and early printed works of Persian literature, represented by the works of Persian and Dagestani authors, provide a rich source base for studying this topic. The Persian influence on the spiritual culture of the peoples of Dagestan was beneficial. This influence became possible because Dagestani society, and the environment in which it developed, was receptive to a different culture. Persian literature (in the broad sense of the word), which emerged in Dagestan long before the spread of Islam and developed in the region with Islamic civilization, is an integral part of Dagestani national literature and written book culture.
