At the end of the last century, Dagestan literary scholars created original, innovative research. These include the works of G.G. Gamzatov “Dagestan: historical and literary process” (1990) and “National art culture in a kaleidoscope of memory” (1996). The study of these works contributes to the identification of the evolution of scientific thought, both specifically by their author, and Dagestan literary criticism in general. They are valuable for setting and solving pressing problems, in particular theory and methodology, which do not lose their significance today. G.G. Gamzatov’s research is characterized by a wide coverage of artistic phenomena, an understanding of the verbal culture of Dagestan as an integral system. In this context, the concepts of zonal and regional literary communities are concretized, the functioning of romanticism in the pre-Soviet period is substantiated, and “Renaissance principles” are revealed. The picture of the development of the artistic process according to the concepts of the scientist acquires completeness, trends and directions of national literature are presented as natural, due to the time and creative personality of the masters of the word.
