The article presents the results of a sociolinguistic study of four monoaul Dagestani languages — Archin, Ginukhi, Gunzib and Khinalug, represented on the territory of the Republic of Dagestan and the Republic of Azerbaijan. The purpose of the article is to analyze the current sociolinguistic situation of the monoaul Dagestani languages and to scientifically predict the ways of their preservation and development. The scientific novelty lies in the description of the sociolinguistic portrait of monoaular languages based on their sociolinguistic features. Detailed information is provided on the belonging of a language to a particular family or group of languages, on the social status, the number of native speakers, the area of distribution, the social functions performed, and the specifics of functioning. Special attention is paid to the study of the peculiarities of language use, bilingualism and attitudes towards the native, Avar, Azerbaijani and Russian languages in these communities. Of considerable interest is the stable diglossia that has developed between the Archin, Ginukh, Gunzib and Avar languages, on the one hand, and the Hinalug and Azerbaijani languages, on the other. The above sociolinguistic portrait of monoaular languages provides a holistic view of the small number of unwritten languages functioning both in Russia and abroad.
