The article attempts to explain the exclusion of the article “Daphnis and Chloe” (1896) from D.S. Merezhkovsky’s book “The Eternal Companions” in the first (1911–1913) and second (1914) editions of his complete works. It is conjectured that “Conversations with Goethe”, in their first Russian translation by D.V. Averkiev (1891), inspired Merezhkovsky to translate Longus’s novel and affected its interpretation provided in his article. Responding to Goethe's views on that work, Merezhkovsky formulated his own attitude to the age of Longus, highlighted historically significant cultural signposts (antiquity, the Renaissance) and names and drew parallels between various art forms (literature, painting). This indicates a deliberate attribution of significant phenomena of the past that make up the legacy of Russian symbolism. Merezhkovsky’s heightened interest towards the figure of Goethe is traced in a number of his articles, including the article “Goethe” based entirely on Averkiev’s translation. Presumably, “Goethe” should be considered as the linked or parallel text to “Daphnis and Chloe” within the digital publication of “The Eternal Companions”. This non-linear relationship between various parts of Merezhkovsky’s works is corroborated by an examination of his other writings.

Keywords: D.S. Merezhkovsky, “The Eternal Companions”, “Daphnis and Chloe”, “Goethe”, digital publication, parallel text, linked text
