Ethno-eidema “wormwood” in the old Russian-Turkic cultural semiosphere

The article is devoted to the analysis of the phenomenon of the ethnoeydem as a lacunar component of the text, reflecting ethnic identity and national-cultural values. Using the example of the 13th century Old Russian Galician-Volhynian Chronicle, the ethnoeydem “wormwood” (“yovshan”) is examined, symbolizing the Kipchak steppe, homeland, and the mental values of the ancient Turkic tribes. The author demonstrates how the ethnoeydem functions within the literary traditions of Russia, Azerbaijan, and Kazakhstan, including the works of A.N. Maykov, B. Vahabzade, and M.D. Simashko-Shamis, and reflects intercultural and interlinguistic differences. The study emphasizes the significance of the ethnoeydem as a textual and semantic marker, allowing the identification of hidden cultural codes, historical mental models, and ethnic symbols transmitted across generations. The research shows that ethnoeydems carry not only a linguistic but also a cognitive load, enabling the tracing of cultural interactions and processes of acculturation. The work integrates linguistic-cultural and cognitive approaches for a systematic analysis of the ethnic, national, and historical-cultural characteristics of texts, opening new possibilities for understanding ancient texts and studying the cultural memory of peoples. Additionally, it is emphasized that ethnoeydems reveal hidden value orientations and worldview frameworks of specific peoples.
