The article examines the role of V.E. Khalizev’s conception about the world-accepting principle in the Russian and a global literature and about literary supertypes caused by opposing value orientations in the evolution of the literary estate. It is shown that it was one of the character supertypes identified by Khalizev — the hagiographic-idyllic — that formed the basis of the sentimental ideal, the pinnacle of which was the Russian literary estate of the 18–20th centuries. However, unlike its Western European counterparts, the idyllic chronotope of the Russian estate showed resilience under the pressure of destructive romantic passions and aggressive social elements. The reason for this is seen in the unity of the Russian estate culture of the classical period, on the one hand, European sentimentalism, on the other — domestic Christian-Orthodox values inherited from the estate topics of Ancient Russia. It is this synthesis that determines the national identity of the Russian literary estate against a pan-European background. The conclusion is applied to the analysis of A.P. Chekhov’s play “The Cherry Orchard”, where, along with the idyllic principle shown by Khalizev, a hagiographic Orthodox layer opens up, allowing us to understand the passive behavior of the characters in the play in the matter of ‘saving’ the cherry orchard as manifestation of traditional Russian Orthodox holiness — ‘pure’ suffering, voluntary doom, stemming from an unwillingness to defend oneself from profane evil by unrighteous means. The contribution of Khalizev to the understanding of the national identity of the Russian estate topos is noted.
