Dialects are the most important sources for studying the history of the Dargin language as a whole, as well as the culture, worldview, and traditions of ethnic groups of a particular Dargin dialect. The authors of the article provide overview information about the research of scientists in the Dargin dialectology. The works of scientists and the results of their research make an invaluable contribution to the development of Dargin dialectology, because it provides the facts on the similarities and distinctive peculiarities of the idiom in comparison with other dialects or the literary Dargin language. Dialects often preserve phenomena that have been lost in the literary language and are not reflected in written monuments. The term “dialect” in research works on the Dargin language is mentioned as a “hyperonym”, due to the fact that today there is no precise distinction of concepts of unwritten language, dialect, speech. The article analyzes the points of view of scientists on the number of dialects and speeches of the Dargin language. Thus, existing research allows us to identify some idioms as independent unwritten languages of the Dargin group. These include the Kubachi, Khaidak and Chirag dialect languages, which are included in a supra-dialect association with the common Dargin literary language, based on the Akush dialect.
