With the required tint of the secondary sources, Antonio Gramsci’s theoretical lens of “Hegemony” (1948) and Catherine Belsey’s (2013) tool of textual analysis (rhetorical approach), this study analyzes Adele Myers’ Tobacco Wives (2022) for the outlined markers (the emergence of hegemony, dominance through ideology, influence, and resistance against hegemony) of economic hegemonic deterministic interpretation. The study analytically explores the in-question markers in the selected text that how this literary piece reflects the issue of hegemony through the tools of culture, ideology, intellectual and moral leadership in American culture. The findings of the study affirm how such ideologies weave exploitative grounds for subaltern and allied masses, and particularly highlight how female characters — by examining the intersections of gender, race, and class — negotiate their roles and identities within patriarchal communes. Through examination of the characters’ agency, resistance, and negotiation of power, this study reveals the complex dynamics of hegemony and its impact on various social identities. The findings of the study will help develop a comprehensive understanding of the concepts of hegemony, power, and resistance. Offering a novel insight into the concept of hegemony, the study is significant for research students and faculty members of English literature and social sciences. In addition, the research strengthens the fabric of national social institutions and corresponds to the UN’s SDGs No. 1(Low Poverty), 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth), and 10 (Reduce Inequality).
