In this article the origin of a word chechen ‘a box with cover’ is analysed. It is a characteristic of the dialects of the eastern regions of Russia [16. Vol. IV. Р. 355]. The word does not have a clear origin. The reconstructed semantic and word-forming relationships have a very archaic character, which explains the fact that the lexeme chechen lost its word-forming productivity. The author proposes a new explanation of the etymology of the noun chechen, arguing for a connection between this noun and the word shchechit ‘to steal’. It means that the word boroshnya has Slavonic origin and did not come from any other language.
