Across a wide variety of academic disciplines, traditions and functions, the generic constituents of the ‘academic article’ are still unevenly observed and understood. The article deals with the vagueness inherent in defining this form, various types of academic articles, and the formation of new sub-genres under the pressure of developing technologies. Sub-genres depend on a number of factors, namely, the field of science, conventions of academic communities, and language rules and patterns. Of current relevance is developing a comparative and critical analysis of the compositional, lexical and grammatical bases of the academic article in Russian and English. In turn, special attention is devoted to the extent that the dramatic technological transformations in academic publishing are affecting the academic article at the stylistic and compositional level.

Keywords: academic article, genre, composition, social media, academic search engine optimisation.
