This article examines the genre, compositional features, thematics, and imagery of A. Ismailov’s play “The Torch of Mamnun”. The issues raised by the playwright (relations between the people and their rulers, despotism, deviations from the principles of popular rule and the rule of law, individual conscience and the public good, etc.) are analyzed within the context of the moral and philosophical quests of Lezgin drama of the last third of the 20th century. The drama emotionally conveys the atmosphere of a period of change (the second half of the 19th — early 20th centuries), painting a concrete image of a man whose life reflects spiritual quests, the search for his own path, service to high ideals, and more. The dramatic action focuses on the life and fate of the historical figure, public figure, and writer-educator Hasan Alkadari. Particular attention is paid to depicting the complex, indirect relationship between man and time and history. Historical scenes in the drama serve as lessons from the past, a command to live by the laws of active goodness. The playwright’s proposed version of the moral and psychological drama (duty and insight, choice and conscience) through which his hero goes through seems interesting. The play explores not only the antagonistic confrontation between the people and those in power, but also the individual who suffers and protests within this conflict.
