This article examines the functioning of the European canonical genre, the sonnet, in the Karachay-Balkar historical and literary process, which evolved from free adaptations to the adaptation of a form regulated by the classical model. K. Kuliev, S. Gurtuyev, Kh. Bairamukova, and other authors played a significant role in the development of the sonnet as a poetic genre. The Balkar poet of the 1960s, M. Mokaev, made a special contribution to the development and transformation of the sonnet, adhering to both the formal canons and the substantive boundaries of the genre. This article introduces previously unexamined sonnets by M. Mokaev into scholarly circulation for the first time. An analysis of the key structural-compositional and cognitive-stylistic aspects of the lyric-epic cycle “Tuug’an zherimi sonetleri” (“Sonnets of My Homeland”) is conducted within the context of interpretations: “place reflection” (“geocultural topic”) — “biographical reflection” — “creative act” (the theme of poetry’s immortality). The textual analysis traces the reception of European solid form in young written literature, revealing the degree of conformity with the classical canon and the permissibility of deviations from it. An analysis of the poetic motifs allows us to conclude that M. Mokaev’s sonnets demonstrate the emergence of a unique genre consciousness not through the borrowing or adaptation of new poetic models (Petrarchan or Shakespearean), but through the author's individual refraction of traditional sonnet motifs. The semantic multi-layered nature of the works serves as an allegorical tool for expressing the creative credo.
