The article presents the experience of understanding the genesis of the theme of Peter the Great and Peter’s transformations in the creativity of A.N. Tolstoy using the example of the story “Obsession”. Embodying the idea of the work, the writer uses not only documentary sources, torture notes of the 17th century, but also the storylines of A.S. Pushkin’s poem “Poltava” and the novel by N.V. Gogol “Viy”. Gogol’s storyline defines the development of the love line in the story “Obsession”, and Pushkin acts as a framing, historically conditioned. This allows us to conclude that already at the very beginning of the introduction to the topic of Peter, later the main one in the creativity of A.N. Tolstoy, the writer relies on the “crystalline forms” of the classics, is guided by the Pushkin principle of historicism.

Keywords: A.N. Tolstoy, Peter the Great, A.S. Pushkin, “Poltava”, N.V. Gogol, “Viy”, principle of historicism
