The relevance of the study is determined by the current trends in the study of literature from a value perspective. The article aims to identify the nature of the relationship between Leonid Andreyev’s artistic worldview and the trend of ‘chernukha’ in literature at the turn of the 20th and 21st centuries. This relationship is subjected to a comparative-typological and axiological analysis for the first time in literary studies. The interaction between elements of realism and modernism in Andreyev’s work is influenced by his tragically divided worldview. A significant part of the writer’s works expresses cosmic pessimism, which implies the meaninglessness of human life and the existence of the world. These value orientations are similar to the negativity that is a global trend in the narrative art of the turn of the second and third millennia. The aesthetic and poetic differences between these two trends of world-denial are rooted in their philosophical assumptions. Modernism as a cultural paradigm absolutizes the subject, while postmodernism assumes that truth is nothing. Andreev’s modernist rejection of the world is driven by a desire to resolve the mystery of existence and find a higher meaning. The trend of world negation that emerged in the late 20th century does not involve an existential conflict, as it does not assume the freedom of the subject. Transgressive strategies in such literature convey the value relativism inherent in the postmodern cultural paradigm. This type of negative worldview is based on the rejection of the hierarchy of values. The proposed typology contributes to understanding the uniqueness of the cultural crises of the early 20th century, the recent past, and the present.
