The Kursk onyms are considered as a specially organized system determined by the geographical conditions and the history of the region. As a rule, its structural elements are rivers, settlements of a natural geographical nature, the names of which depend on the features of the landscape of the territory. Such geogenic synonyms are associated with the names of hills, ravines, rivers, streams, and springs and reflect the distinctive location of settlements in relation to terrain and hydroelectric facilities. With the help of linguistic (etymological), geographical, historical and cultural analysis of the hydronym and oikonym Oboyan, the origin of the proper name from the appellative is proved. Special attention is paid to the study of intermediate stages in the chain of changes in the lexical meaning of the modern name of the Kursk region.

Keywords: regional identification, Kursk, etymology, onomastics, toponymy, hydronym, oikonym, Oboyan
