The article examines the functioning of substandard units (jargonisms, argotisms) in the idiolect of writers of the 19th century. Sub-standard lexical and phraseological units in the idiolect of different writers perform similar functions. The use of sub-standard units in accordance with the intentions of the author’s discursive personality makes the texts unique. The use of substandardisms is determined not only by the ideological and thematic content of literary texts, but also by the peculiarities of the ideological dominants of the discursive personality of the authors. In the artistic texts of N.G. Pomyalovsky, N.V. Gogol, F.M. Dostoevsky, L. Charskaya, P. Boborykin, Vs. Krestovsky slang and argotic units perform nominative and expressive functions. If the use of jargonisms is rare in the idiolects of N.V. Gogol and F.M. Dostoevsky, then in the works of Vs. Krestovsky and N.G. Pomyalovsky substandarisms are the basis of idiolect and perform the cognitive function of modeling the linguistic and conceptual picture of the world. At the same time, the cognitive function of substandarisms is related to the communicative one, they are multifunctional, which allows the authors to implement the function of emotional impact on the addressee of the text. The study of the functioning of substandarisms in the idiolect of writers of the 19th century suggests that substandart develops in a diachrony and represents socio-cultural continuity and a change in the language system.
