The review gives an account of a new book of articles by the well-known literary critic V.E. Khalizev. A brief analysis of the world outlook, interests, range of main topics and the most important problems solved in the scientific works of the prominent theorist is carried out. The adherence of the scientist, who taught theoretical disciplines at the Faculty of Philology of Lomonosov Moscow State University for more than fifty years, to the best traditions of Russian literary studies, its deep and ethical principles is highly appreciated. The articles collected in the book show the importance of the traditions of religious philosophy in the Soviet period, touch upon general issues of literary and critical life in Russia in the 1930s — 1980s. The scientific activity of A.A. Ukhtomsky, V.M. Zhirmunsky, A.P. Skaftymov, S.G. Bocharov is considered in monographic reviews revealing the unity of philosophical, cultural, and literary aspects of their works. Several articles are devoted to the theory of M.M. Bakhtin. A significant part of the book is connected with historical and functional studies, covering the peculiarities of the perception of the works of A.S. Pushkin, A.P. Chekhov, and G. Ibsen in Russia at the turn of the 19th–20th centuries. The main interest of the scholar’s studies relates to the poetics of literary work, which is manifested not only in special articles, for example, on the functions of chance in a literary work, but also in those works in which more general philosophical questions related to the problems of the history of Russian literary studies are raised.
