In accordance with the traditions of the encyclopedic genre, this article contains basic biographical information about Valentin Evgenievich Khalizev (1930–2016), an outstanding literary scholar and Honored Professor of the Lomonosov Moscow State University. The article reconstructs the main stages of the scholar and teacher’s career at the Faculty of Philology. It provides a brief analytical overview of the researcher’s key scientific and educational works. To adequately explain his individuality in the subject-logical, socio-historical and personal-psychological planes, it uses information collected from disparate sources. At the end, it provides a bibliographic appendix, which is by no means exhaustive, but recommendatory in nature and may have independent heuristic value for anyone interested in the history of Russian literary criticism in the twentieth century. The Case of V.E. Khalizev, in whose works the conversation about literature always received an anthropological dimension, and history and theory organically complemented each other, serves as a clear confirmation of the thesis according to which the biography of a literary scholar is a direct form of humanitarian self-awareness, and in this lies its historical and scientific value, as well as theoretical and methodological significance. The patterns of development of literary thought are unimaginable in isolation from the study of the history of science “in persons”.

Keywords: Valentin Evgenievich Khalizev, literary criticism, literary theory, history of literature, history and methodology of science
