The article is devoted to V. Astafyev's novella “The Merry Soldier” (1997) as a phenomenon of late military prose. The problems and composition of the work, the image of the narrator, the principles of artistic selection and presentation of voluminous front-line and post-war material are considered. The main attention is paid to the generational, socio-psychological character traits of the “cheerful soldier” as a truth-seeker in personal and public spheres, prone to a decisive reassessment of his own combat experience and the circumstances of national life during and after the war.

Keywords: Victor Astafyev, war in literature, social truth-seeking, autobiographical prose, the image of the narrator
