The article analyzes Aitmatov’s stories of the 1950–1970s on a military theme: “Face to Face”, “Jamila”, “Mother’s Field”, “Early Cranes”. The article considers textual criticism, problems of feat in war and in the rear, desertion, images of the main characters, plots, the relationship between the epic and lyrical principles. Comparative and typological links are established between Aitmatov’s “Face to Face” and V. Rasputin’s story “Live and Remember”.
