This study based on materials from the newspapers “Saratovsky Dnevnik” and “Saratovsky Listok” reconstructs the history of the first production of “Three Sisters” by A.P. Chekhov in Saratov. It was revealed that on the initiative of the entrepreneur N.I. Sobolshchikov-Samarin, the play was staged by director A.N. Senitsky at the City Theater. Actors from the Kazan-Saratov Society of Dramatic Artists were involved in the play, and the role of Baron N.L. Tuzenbach was performed by M.M. Petipa, invited from Moscow. The premiere of the play took place on March 15, 1901. The play “Three Sisters” was not popular among the audience, since tickets for the play were selling poorly, with the only exception being the day of the premiere. B.A. Markovich attributed the failure of the production to the play of the Saratov actors, whose performance was obviously influenced by “Sick People” by G. Hauptmann. The City Theatre actors failed to convey the mood that the author intended when creating the play. As a result, it is concluded that the Saratov production of Three Sisters in 1901 can be considered a failure because the director and actors were unable to find the right understanding of the performance. A.P. Chekhov foresaw this problem, which is why he did not recommend “Three Sisters” for use in tours.
