The article analyzes the legacy of book graphics by Dagestani artists Gasan and Gusein Sungurov. The article presents the experience of creating illustrations for Dagestani poetry, which quite widely and multifacetedly reflects the originality of the artists’ handwriting. The problems of synthesis of illustrations and book design, the relationship of literary text and the characteristics of the forms of its visual accompaniment are studied. The issues of style and diversity of the artistic language of the Sungurovs’ book graphics are considered in the context of the development of Dagestani graphics in the 1960–1970s. Depending on the age categories and genre and thematic affiliation, heterogeneous means of expression in illustrating books by Dagestani poets of different nationalities are revealed. The nature and depth of the artists’ reading of the authors’ literary style is comprehended. Issues of creative comprehension of the artistic traditions of the past in the context of modern trends in graphic art are also a subject of particular interest in the study of the legacy of the Sungurov brothers’ book graphics. Their contribution and significance in the development of fine arts in Dagestan during the period under study is assessed.
