The article considers the evolution of national literature at the time of the ‘thaw’ based on the material of Kumyk poetry; the emancipation of artistic thought from non-literary factors is clearly manifested primarily on ethnic markers, for an appeal to traditional, artistic, moral, ethical values appears as one of the main signs of the turn of literature into a new path of development, comparable to the previous Soviet period. The renewal of the national art space was frontal; clearly expressed in the content of the texts, it was reflected both in poetics, which acquired an ethnic color, and in the genre system. Evolution had a certain dynamic; at first it was realized in love, landscape, social lyrics. Subsequently, the authors began to appeal more and more to the image of a small homeland — Kumykia, thereby shading their national identity, began to inspire the original folk, traditional moral, artistic and aesthetic values. In fact, during these years, literature began to regain the status of art.

Keywords: Kumyk poetry, thaw, evolution, small homeland, national traditions, lyricism
