The article analyzes a reprinted episode with scientific comments “Kokotai’s Wake” from the epic “Manas”, recorded from the Issyk-Kul manaschi Nazar Bolotov by Ch. Valikhanov in May 1856, included in the collection of “Glorifying “Manas” all over the world. The first edition”, which indicates its historiographical and scientific significance, mistakes and shortcomings made by the authors of the collection. In comparison with the classical manaschi this episode has a relatively low artistic and aesthetic level, therefore it has only historiographical significance, besides, this is not the first recorded episode in the history of the epic, some officials of the city of Omsk of tsarist Russia had similar episodes already in 1815. Absolutely erroneous are the statements of Kyrgyz Manas scholars that Ch. Valikhanov did not know about “Manas” before coming to Issyk-Kul, he had heard from N.V. Kostyletsky’s lectures about “Manas” while he was still a cadet of the cadet corps in Omsk. Kostyletsky, often visited a guest house built for Kazakh sultans and Kyrgyz biys, where he met with akyns-improvisers, storytellers of works of oral folk art (storytellers), writers of kyuu (melodies on komuz) and thanks to them expanded his concepts and ideas about “Manas”. Despite some shortcomings, it is noted that the scientific anthology “Glorifying “Manas” to the whole world. The first edition” plays a positive role in the promotion of Manas studies.
