The article is devoted to the problem of apophaticism in Russian culture, folklore and literature. The research material is represented by a late pre-mortem short poem by S. Yesenin “The Blue Coat. Blue eyes…” (1925) which is analysed from the ontological and hermeneutic position: the essay elicits the ethos of life and death where the apophatic horizon can be approached through the folklore code of the work. The poet was well familiar with the folklore tradition, studying folk art through ethnographers’ and folklorists’ collections, collecting folklore; at the same time, he entered into a dialogue disputing with the tradition, which led to the latter’s transformation in poetics. Apophaticism hereby is understood as a primordial element of the Russian culture, connected with search for an ideal, “another realm”, which we find in the Russian fairy tale. Russian folklore is a rich source of apophatic representations (formulas like “going I don’t know where” and “looking for I don’t know what”). This must be taken into account analysing the Russian poet’s works inspired by the folklore tradition. The analysis of Yesenin’s poem makes it possible not only to outline new approaches to works of art in literary criticism, but also to treat differently the issue of studying apophaticism as a phenomenon of Russian literary culture. At this level, apophaticism of figurative cosmos in culture acts not just as a self-negating definition — although we also address the apophaticism of Russian poetic language (invisible, unknown, unthinkable, never-ending) — but also as an ontological function.
Keywords: apophaticism; folklore; tradition; ethos; S. Yesenin’s creative heritage
