The study is conducted within the paradigm of toponymic vocabulary. It examines the structural-semantic and etymological analysis of the original and substratum toponymy of northern Avaria. Along with the extensive original layer of Avar toponymy, the substratum toponymy found in northern Avaria also plays a significant role. The geographic names of settlements in the Gumbetovsky, Khunzakh, Untsukul, Botlikh, Tsumadinsky, Gergebil, Shamil, and Gunibsky districts contain names whose etymology is possible only with the help of these Andic languages. These toponymic data indicate the assimilation of the Andic languages historically spoken in this area. This is also confirmed by the greater similarity of the morphemic structure of the dialects of the southern dialect with the Andic languages than with the dialects of the northern dialect. Substrate toponymy constitutes a significant portion of the total number of North Avar toponyms. The need to study it is dictated by a number of considerations related to both linguistic and historical data. The ability to identify historical processes that took place in the past through the study of substrate facts underlies the interest in their study. It can also be noted that the study of substrate toponyms can yield a range of interesting data for other sciences — geography, botany, zoology, geology, etc.
