The article reveals the semantics of the title of the novel “White Circle” by David Markish: as an antithesis to the cultural and historical phenomenon — “Black Square” by Kazimir Malevich; as an artistic and decorative stylization of the ‘mandala’, an ancient symbol of the spiritual path, — in the design of the book; as a metatextual sign of the circle and the sun — key concepts in the worldview of the protagonist of the novel, Matvey Katz (and his prototype — the artist Sergei Kalmykov). The symbolism of the title is associated with the stable patterns of the literary image of the artist as such, considered in the article, and with the biographical details of the life of the hero (and his prototype). The corpus of artistic devices — components of the image of the protagonist-artist — is noted: pictorial ekphrasis, visual chiasmus, intradiegetic imagery, as well as the features of this image: loneliness, artistry, shocking, asceticism. The material of the Kalmykov’s discourse is used as argumentation: the memoirs of eyewitnesses — writers Yu.O. Dombrovsky, V.M. Karpenko, artists A. Brener, S. Maslov, composer E. Brusilovsky, psychiatrist V.E. Kagan, as well as studies of the work of S.I. Kalmykov — V.S. Buchinskaya, T.G. Chudinovskaya. Methodologically, the analysis of the title is based on the works of theorists S.D. Krzhizhanovsky, I.R. Galperin, Yu.B. Orlitsky.
