The article is devoted to determining the place of humor in the cognitive-linguistic picture of the world, revealing its essence in the context of ethnic mentality and mentality. The choice of the research topic is due to some factor — insufficient knowledge of the specifics of the national mentality from the standpoint of humorology, the importance of considering humorous precedent expressions and texts in connection with mentality for linguocognitology and mental linguistics, as well as the need to highlight and characterize certain cognitive and linguistic features of Kyrgyz humor in terms of ethnolinguistics. The purpose of the article is to consider the peculiarities of national humor from the point of view of the doctrine of mentality and the cognitive-linguistic picture of the world of peoples. In the course of the research, a correlation was established between the concepts of “cognitive-linguistic picture of the world”, “mentality” and “mentality”; types and types of linguistic mentality are determined; singled out and described the motives for distinguishing the varieties of cognitive-linguistic pictures of the world and demonstrated the originality of the Kyrgyz mentality and humor.
