This article comprehends the linguosemiotic mechanism of representing the spatial image of the ‘road’. The material of the analysis was the text of the story of the Soviet and Belarusian prose writer of the twentieth century Vasil Bykov, who wrote in Belarusian and Russian, “Crane Cry”, created in 1959. The choice of this particular work is due, firstly, to the fact that it is the spatial image of the road that is largely plot-forming. Secondly, the work of V. Bykov traditionally attracts the attention of literary scholars, but the linguistic component of his works has not been sufficiently studied. In the basis of the algorithm describing the mechanism of representation of the spatial image, we put the concept of Yu.S. Stepanov about the language operations of nomination, predication and localization. The name of the spatial image ‘road’ in the texts is attributed to predicates that display color, light, audio and other characteristics of space in general and road in particular. During the analysis, it is established that the language sign “road” is indexical-symbolic in the text. The index component represents a particular spatial coordinate. The symbol as a sign has no close connection with its referent. And the symbolic component of the sign ‘road’ reflects the abstract concept of the life and military path of the heroes of the stories.
