The paper is devoted to the analysis of types of author’s consciousness in writings of famous Tatar poets of the Middle Ages: Kul Galie, Mukhammedyar, Kul Sharif. It is known that in the absence of theoretical works on poetics, ideas about the author, his role, and his purpose were expressed in the literary works themselves. In the verses of Kul Galie and Muhammadyar, these ideas were determined by the traditions of adaba, an influential trend in the literatures of the Muslim East, the purpose of which was to form a well-bred and educated person, instilling the rules of conduct that a Muslim should follow. In accordance with these traditions, in Kul Galie’s poems “Kyissai-Yusuf” (“The Tale of Yusuf”) and Muhammadyar’s Nuri Sodur (“Light of Hearts”) and Tokhfai Murdan (“The Gift of Men”), the author acts as a bearer of religious consciousness, encouraging the reader to live in accordance with the norms of Muslim ethics. Characteristic of medieval literature, the idea of poetry as a divine inspiration is combined (at the level of poetics) with ideas of high poetic craft, which finds expression in stable figurative comparisons (the poet is likened to a jeweler, gardener, cultivator of a garden, etc.). It is established that in the poems of Kul Sharif, the author’s identity is determined by the key concepts of Sufism: zuhd, tauba, dhikr. The subject of consciousness in Kul Sharif’s verses is a Sufi whose life is dedicated to the knowledge of Truth (God).
