Notes and Comments by V.E. Khalizev in the Margins of V.Ya. Propp’s book “Morphology of the Fairy Tale”

The article introduces for the first time into scientific circulation the signs and comments of V.E. Khalizev, made in the margins of the book by V.Ya. Propp “Morphology of the Fairy Tale” and the article by E.M. Meletinsky that concludes this edition. The identified notes are grouped and analyzed. The logic of reading the book is traced: from clarification of general methodological guidelines and principles to understanding what remains beyond the boundaries of the theory: historical development of the scientific topic, the question of the subject of action in the fairy tale, his qualities, motivations for actions, acquisitions or losses of fairy-tale values. It is emphasized that, building a dialogue with the scientist, Khalizev not only records the features of someone else's approach, but also notes its limitations, the possibilities for further development of the theory. A group of remarks related to the concept of “value” and the idea of the plot as the restoration of harmony is especially highlighted. Subsequently, in the textbook “Theory of Literature”, the classification of Propp is used to define the dual function of the character as a bearer of functions and value orientations. A conclusion is made about the movement of Khalizev’s reading and research thought towards overcoming scientism, positivism, the exclusion of the “human factor” from the sphere of literary criticism, the subsequent appeal to theories of culture as a “sphere of positive values” and axiology, ideas of moral philosophy and personalism.
