The article examines issues related to the phenomena of lexicalization and phraseologization observed in the Ossetian language, which reflect modern communicative processes and features of the use of linguistic units in speech. Individual types of lexicalized units of the Ossetian language are analyzed, and the methods of formation and mechanisms of their functioning are considered based on the basic definition of the concept of ‘lexicalization’. This allows us to determine a number of features of the manifestation of lexicalization, which are explained by the mixed type of grammatical structure of the Ossetian language. The isolation of a separate form of a word into an independent significant unit of the language is easily detected both in Russian and in the Ossetian language. Differences were revealed in the study of word combinations gravitating toward semantic transformation, some of which, remaining word combinations, become culturally significant concepts of a conceptual nature, while others gravitate toward a formal-grammatical fusion of components with their own paradigm of word inflection. Lexicalization occurs under the influence of a number of other linguistic phenomena and processes, the distinction between which complicates the typical classification. Against this background, a fundamentally different approach is necessary when considering Ossetian verbal phraseological units, the semantics of which is partially or completely freed from their connotative meanings and acquires stylistic neutrality, which allows them to function as lexical units with a holistic meaning. The study allows us to conclude that phraseologization as a linguistic process associated with the emergence of phraseological units proper has other mechanisms of emergence and functioning and cannot be considered as one of the types of lexicalization.
