The article presents an analysis of the system of tropes and figures of speech in the lyrical texts of the outstanding Russian poet and literary critic Vasily Kirillovich Trediakovsky, based on the general context of the rhetorical tradition of Russia. The influence of various traditions on the poet is analyzed — Western European rhetoric, Christian and ancient images. Particular attention is paid to the personality of Feofan Prokopovich, who can rightfully be considered the poetic mentor of V.K. Trediakovsky. The contribution of V.K. Trediakovsky to the development of the Russian poetic tradition is considered, and examples of tropes and figures of speech and their combinations are also given. Particular attention is paid to metaphor (both specifically and verbal), which is one of Trediakovsky’s most significant tools of speech influence. Detailed comparative data is provided indicating the activity of rhetorical devices in poetic texts of different authors (V.K. Trediakovsky is compared with A.D. Kantemir and M.V. Lomonosov). The analysis of the means of speech expressiveness demonstrates that metaphor, personification and metonymy (those means, which in the terminology of Theophanes Prokopovich belong to the group of ‘pleasing’) become important means of influence in the works of V.K. Trediakovsky, contributing to the emotional impact on the reader and semantic emphasizing of certain elements of the text.
