M. Gorky and the art of the Russian avant-garde (To the problem of intermediality)

The article examines closely related to the problem of intermediality the question of M. Gorky’s attitude to the Russian avant-garde — the most striking trend in the art of Russia in the first third of the twentieth century. The facts of Gorky’s creative and personal contacts with leading representatives of avant-garde art are considered: the founder of Russian literary expressionism L.N. Andreev, poets and futurist artists D.D. Burlyuk, V.V. Mayakovsky, expressionist artist B.D. Grigoriev, etc. It is told about Gorky’s participation as an honorary member of the Organizing Committee in the First Art Exhibition of Russian Art in Berlin in 1922. Analysis of Gorky’s works of the early 1920s (in particular, his story “About the harm of philosophy”) in the context of the work of Russian avant-gardists reveals a certain similarity in their ideological and aesthetic views, in their poetics, reveals their common protest and humanitarian pathos aimed at protecting the human person suffering in an ugly deformed world of wars and revolutions.
