Aphoristic genres occupy a significant place in the folklore of the peoples of Dagestan. They are widely represented among all peoples: avars, laks, aguls, dargins, nogais, kumyks, lezgins, rutuls, tsakhurs, tabasarans. Based on a comparative analysis of Avar and Lak proverbs and sayings, an attempt was made to identify the richness of use, the originality of existence, general and local features of the proverbs of two Dagestan peoples — speakers of not closely related languages. The work is devoted to the analysis of Avar and Lak proverbs, reflecting the attitude towards the homeland, history, work and friendship, honor and conscience, life and death, freedom and will in order to identify the specific features of the ethnic mentality of peoples. The material under consideration is characterized by great ideological and aesthetic value, national specificity, reflecting the spiritual and moral values of the life of the people
