Image of Peter the Great is being analyzed as shown through the biblical, mythological and concrete-historical retrospections in the works of the 18th century. Following the traditions of the Old Russian literature, such method of characteristics unites the majority of the authors of the 18th century. Yet, the biblical and mythological characters are compared to Peter the Great on the basis of common traits, while the concrete personages of the world and partly Russian history of the past centuries are contrasted to him. As a result, loci communes of the analyzed texts is the uniqueness of Peter the Great as a historical figure. Another tendency is also noticeable: at some point Peter the Great is approaching his crowned descendants, carrying on his legacy and thus to a certain extent becoming equal to him. Quite a different comparison is made later by Dashkova and Karamzin in favour of Catherine the Great: 18th century at its close ponders over Peter’s deeds (the impact of his work and the methods he used to achieve his goals), passing it onto the 19th century and generations to come.

Keywords: Peter the Great, literature of the 18th century, biblical, mythological, concrete-historical retrospections
