This article is devoted to the study of the embodiment of the image of representatives of the Socialist Revolutionary Party (SRs) in the works of Leonid Andreev, one of the brightest representatives of realistic literature of the early 20th century. The main goal of the study is to study the activities, appearance and inner world of the SR terrorists in the stories “Governor” and “Darkness”, written during the period of the greatest activity of the SRs (1905–1911). The authors, using the historical-typological method and the comparative approach and the principle of historicism, determine the reasons for L.N. Andreev’s appeal to the SR theme, his attitude both to the revolution in general and to the tactics of the SRs, including political terrorism. In the scientific literature the theme of turning to the artistry of the images of the SRs has long been only fragmentary. The scientific novelty of this study is represented by a comprehensive approach to the study of the artistic images of the heroes of the designated stories of L.N. Andreev. The authors, having studied a number of studies on the designated topic and having analyzed the creative legacy of the writer, come to the conclusion about the many faces of the Socialist Revolutionary movement, shown by L.N. Andreev, about the author’s sympathy for the revolutionaries, his desire to show them as fighters for ‘their’ truth and ‘their’ world, ultimately doomed against the Socialist Revolutionaries themselves.

Keywords: Socialist Revolutionary Party, L.N. Andreev, short fiction, political terrorism, revolution
