The article examines the genre specificity of Yu. Olesha’s novel-story “The Three Fat Men” as well as its belonging to the literary tradition of the early 20th century in the context of historical and socio-cultural phenomena of that period. Particular attention is paid to the study of both the compositional peculiarities of the work (spatial and temporal organization of the text and how clear the plot is), as well as the conceptual and semantic side of the narrative where the illusion of the realistic fairy-tale world is created with the help of the artistic methods. It is also studied the influence of foreign literary fairy tales by such authors as W. Hauf, E.T.A. Hoffmann, G.H. Andersen, etc. on the original narrative style of the Soviet writer. Additionally, there is a reference to the acute social phenomena contemporary to the author and at the same time dramatic plots of W. Shakespeare and V. Hugo, which allows us to talk about the complexity and dual directionality of the novel-tale “The Three Fat Men” and the author’s desire to create a children’s fairy tale with “adult meaning”. Furthermore, it is conducted an analysis of the author’s creative efforts during the period of struggle with the fairy tale, in search of an original genre form embodied in the novel for children, in which fairy tale conventions are intertwined with traditional novel techniques. Thus, the mix of folklore and literary beginnings, novel and fairy tale, theatric and drama, epic and lyrical give the work of Y. Olesha uniqueness and multidimensionality.
