The article characterizes Russian linguocultural studies as a disciplinary area that has its own distinctive features, the most significant of which is the possession of the basic term “linguocultural concept”. It is established that the main difference between a linguocultural concept and a concept is the dominance of the figurative component underlying the metaphor. In terms of the level of abstraction and the impossibility of direct visualization, emotional concepts are directly adjacent to ethical categories, including passion as an all-encompassing feeling of exceptional strength, persistence and duration, visually presented to consciousness through metaphor. In the figurative representation of the semantics of passion, almost all basic types of thematic transfer of attributes of an auxiliary subject are used, where the undisputed leader in frequency of appearance is the block of thermo-, pyro- and photo-metaphors. The metaphor of passion from the definitional role and significance of figuratively embodied semantic features allows us to distinguish three main semantic categories: figurative representation of semantic features of any emotional manifestations; individual author’s metaphors — likening passion to associative peripheral and random objects; the figurative embodiment of passion by metaphorizing its specific definitional attribute: emotional intensity. Going beyond the norm of passion is figuratively embodied with the help of light and heat metaphors, the latter being synaesthetically duplicated by color, when passion is figuratively conveyed by “warm colors”. The “heat” of passion is also embodied in abnormal and extreme weather and climate images, as well as in images of extremely intense phenomena.
